Creating Pathways, Possibilities, and Hope for Foster Youth
Santa Clarita broker Tammey Mai understands what it’s like for older foster children who face huge gaps in the system designed to support them. She co-founded Tidings for Teens (T4T) first as a holiday gift-giving program because most foster teens do not get any gifts during the holidays. It expanded as the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) asked T4T to provide for more children and in more ways. Soon, T4T went from providing $50 gift cards for clothes to $125 gift cards for school supplies and clothes, to hosting an annual back-to-school shopping event for foster youth at stores like Old Navy. Over the past 11 years, Mai helped T4T expand its services to help older foster youth gain marketable skills and learn to advocate for themselves and their communities. Mai understood their needs because she was once a foster child herself. That’s why she has been the driving force behind Tidings for Teens since the beginning, helping over 3,000 teens get the resources they need, grow their skills and find a place where they can bloom.
Tidings for Teens (T4T) is a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering foster youth throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. Mai spends countless hours building strong relationships with the Department of Child Welfare Services and driving public awareness of T4T through social media, and work and personal relationships. “Tammey has a huge heart for these kids,” says T4T co-founder Kelly Meena. “She mentors each young person, books speaking engagements for the teen participants, and gives young people the opportunity to work with local businesses and leadership to spread awareness.” Mai has built a program in which former foster youth are able to be of service to their peers in the system, as well as network with adult business owners and city leadership to brainstorm civil service. Her commitment to the program has been unwavering and valuable beyond measure.
Thanks to Mai’s dedication and hard work, C.A.R. will donate $1,000 to Tidings-for-Teens.
